ZSJ : The Two Popes

Pope Bergoglio calls the ticketing hotline of an airline, thinking to book himself a ticket, the final response is ” Very funny.” ( Looks like taking the first step is often very difficult, maybe what you will get is ridicule from others ( secret smile ) )

The central point of conflict in the film comes from Conservatives and Reformers within the church. The initiator of this contradictory situation was the representative of the Reformists, the *Bishop of Latin America, Bergoglio, who applied his resignation to Pope Benedict XVI.
( * Cardinal Bishop )

In the dialogue between the two men, we can see a collision of the sides of the Conservative and Reformer, creating sparks of thought.
Bergoglio’s reason for resigning was that he no longer wished to be a salesman, a salesman for a product, a product that he could no longer conscientiously endorse.

CHANGE and COMPROMISE

Change is when we take the initiative to adapt to the developments of this era, seeking breakthroughs in thinking and action. But what should not change is one’s initial resolution and one’s belief in doing good.
Compromise represents the change we make when we are forced to submit to money or power, at the cost of going against our own conscience.

We may unwittingly do something that go against our basic morality and conscience, when we realize that, we should stop. A bad decision is like a snowball, if not stopped in time, it will roll bigger and bigger, forming an avalanche. (To use a phrase that netizens often say, “When there is an avalanche, no snowflake is innocent.”) I increasingly feel that a clear understanding and a firm position are particularly important. Even in a fleeting moment, we should not miss the opportunity to make a clear judgment for ourselves.

INTROSPECTION and GRATITUDE

One of the core ideas of Catholicism believes that ” people are born with sin. ” Therefore, we live in this world to atone for our sins, we must pray, and we must repent, which is actually a process of continuous self-reflection. Consciousness is the basic attribute of human beings. People progress by constantly reflecting on their mistakes, and at the same time restrain evil desires which arise from their instincts.

“The Analects” also mentions that ” I examine myself three times a day ” , and only by constantly examining myself can I achieve ” a person should become more impressive after being gone for three days. “

For example, if I had an argument with my mother, do I respect her enough? Did I pass on my negative emotions to my employees when I was irritable in the past? Have I turned off the lights and water to save the earth’s resources? It seems that some small actions, will reflect a person’s upbringing and quality. Just like adding one more ” Thank you “, may let the other party feel a little warmer.

Catholics will pray before meals: ” Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the sunshine and rain that You have given the earth to produce abundant food, and please cleanse this food for us, we pray in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen! “

“Hoeing grain in mid-day heat, the sweat drips down onto the soil. Who knows that the meal on the plate, every single grain comes from hard work.” This ancient poem should be one which all Chinese will know recite. Catholics are grateful to God, and we are grateful to the farmers who work hard in agriculture.

❤️Thank Parents for their nurturing kindness ❤️Thank Teachers for answering questions and giving advice ❤️Thank Friends for their help when we are down ( literal meaning – gifting charcoal in the winter ) ❤️Thank Leaders for their discovery and support ❤️ Thank Colleagues, Classmates for helping one another ❤️……If we always have a thankful heart, it will make you more open-minded and cheerful when dealing with others.

TRUE FRIEND

It is easy to lose yourself if you are alone for a long time, so it is especially important to have a partner with whom you can share and communicate, and the Pope is no exception.

The two Popes have very different lifestyles. One likes to eat alone and enjoy traditional dishes prepared by the chef, the other likes to try street food; One lives in an ancient castle, and the other enjoys humble worldly dwellings ; One likes to play the piano, the other likes tango and football.

……

When Bergoglio took the hands of Pope Benedict XVI and started dancing the tango, when Pope Benedict XVI tried street pizza, and when the two men watched the World Cup Final together, is this a compromise of Pope Benedict XVI?
……

When the two priests confessed to each other, they confided some unspeakable secrets buried in their hearts. They found atonement for each other, and their souls were bound together.

Pope Benedict XVI voluntarily resigned as Pope, and Bergoglio became the first Pope from Latin America. When he heard the news, he called Ratzinger immediately, and at his inauguration, he asked everyone to pray for Pope Benedict XVI. And Ratzinger watched it all from the TV. (It gives a feeling of one hero acknowledging the other.)

The first Pope from Latin America has kept to his usual style, rejecting red leather shoes and ornate Papal capes. He hopes to approach the world with a simpler and more accessible image. He still walks into the world of the poor, understands their suffering, and inspires people’s hearts. ” Any journey, no matter how long, has to start somewhere. Any journey, no matter how glorious, can start with a mistake. So when you feel lost, don’t worry. God will not give up. “ ( First of all, you can’t give up on yourself. )

The whole film reflects the artistic charm of religion, magnificent buildings, beautiful murals, exquisite statues, stately apparel, and also lets us understand the difference between black smoke and white smoke in the Papal Election.

We can see a lot of shaky shots in the film, this technique adds to the sense of breathing of the interaction between the two Popes and can make one feel more immersed, like they are right there with them.

The actor who played Bergoglio never forgot his agenda which is to hand in his “resignation latter” to Pope Benedict XVI. Whenever he brings up his letter of resignation and elicits some reactions from the Pope, it’s a witty clashing of the characters.

A teacher once said to me that good acting opposite a co-star is like playing ping-pong. There is always an attacking side and a defending side, sometimes the attacking and the defending switches between each other. The two experienced veteran actors, with their exciting competition of acting skills, injected some air of fun to this movie which seems somewhat heavy.

At the end of the film, the World Cup final – Germany vs. Argentina, as they drink beer, eat pizza, and cheer for their respective countries! At the same time, these two didn’t forget to do some friendly taunting with each other. Isn’t this how we get along with good friends?

The end credits of the film also turned into colorful slates, as if to tell everyone, that everyone’s life in this world is supposed to be rich and colorful, just like every country, with national flags of different colors and patterns, and different cultures and customs.

This air of worldliness is what we all love.

人间 The world 烟火 smoke and fire, touches the heart of every mortal :
All walks of life, ordinary living, is most comforting to the thoughts of people. This ‘smoke and fire’, describes fire used in simple cooking and eating of meals.

Cardinal Bergoglio : You know the story, the… the two seminarians who… who liked to smoke?
Pope Benedict : No. *They should resist the temp–
Cardinal Bergoglio : Well, yeah, yeah. So, the first one, he goes to his spiritual director, and he says, “Father, is it permitted to smoke while praying?” And the director says, “No. No, of course not.”
… So, the second one, he was a Jesuit. He says to his friend, “Brother, you’re just asking the wrong question.”
So he goes to the director, then he says, “Father, is it permitted to pray while smoking?”
Pope Benedict : Yeah. Pray and smoke at the same ti… Ah? It’s a joke.
